Hearing Tests for Children

Do you have concerns about your child’s hearing?  Are they experiencing speech, learning or behavioral issues?  Assessing hearing will help guide next steps in supporting them.  Our certified audiologist is able to screen children of any age to determine whether hearing is a factor and help provide guidance on what should be done next.

What can I expect at a pediatric audiology appointment?

When you bring your child in for a pediatric audiology appointment, you will be asked to describe what areas of concern you have regarding the child.  Be sure to ask questions in order to ensure you have the information you need. The audiologist will discuss the types of testing used to evaluate.  At the time of the testing, the audiologist will explain if concerns were found, as well as what next steps are recommended.

How do you test my child’s hearing?

At Local Care Hearing Services, we are able to check your child’s hearing using automatic and behavioural tools.  The automatic tools are quick and easy, and require only your child to sit quietly.  These tests, which include Wideband Tympanometry and Otoacoustic Emissions, will tell us how your child’s middle ear and inner ear are functioning.  You are encouraged to bring items to distract your child from the procedures, such as quiet toys or tablets.

Behavioural audiograms will also be completed when age appropriate.  This involves simple tasks such as having your child respond to various sounds and repeat back words.

What is the cost of the testing?

There is a $75 fee for our pediatric hearing checks.
